idea 5

This is the sketch of the idea I conceptualized in my post titled "overall idea" Difficult to draw this in 3d so tried with the shading, the second reification of the paraglider is supposed to look bigger as the paraglider flies closer. The snake will be such bigger than the rest as it will be closer than all the rest. As they come closer the scale will become larger of the deformed spheres
to elaborate the closeness slightly. The background will have a background of clouds and ground as the image changes or something along those lines as I will explore in active experimentation.
The spheres will blend in the same type of texture but can obviously be seen thorughout despite the being the same texture. maybe placing the paragliders in the way that it is using the clouds to form the shape.

idea-nature

These are actually two different idea concepts but with the same adjectives for the space.
These adjectives being natural, pure, radiant, fresh, and flowing
So the first image is of a sun, which turns into a stalk with leaves, reification making the leaves and invariance using the same shapes but transforming them to make the image becoming a door and then a building.
The second one from stalk to tree to treehouse on a tree.
These ones I find quite interesting but not that interesting.

Overall Idea

My main overall idea would be made digitally on 3d max, and plan to do something along the lines of reification and invariance. I really like the idea of the forth idea. But I think I can make the freedom without the need of birds and the juxtaposition not so obvious as to use a prison cell. Instead I could use a snake, who is stuck on the ground as well as the opposite of a paraglider that is made and snakes which is a natural organism. So another juxtaposition can be natural and man-made.
From the front it will look normal but from every other angle, I plan for it to look not normal but distorted and scewed in many ways. The form in which my project would use would be video. As it gradually changes from sphere to paraglider to a diving paraglider to crashing and becoming a snake, stuck on the ground with no freedom. The audience will first see it from a angle that looks as though it is nothing as shapes are just randomly placed in the different angle, but as the angle changes and see the full image it will give a surprise.

idea 5

This image is of slow leisurely, sluggish and unhurried vehicles, as bikes cannot go that fast and the old car will be slow, and the plane makes it a sort of leisurely ride. The juxtaposition being land and the sky. I do not like this idea very much as it doesn't really show much and doesn't look that interesting.Making it 3d but will make more distorted if on 3d max, but as drawing, found it hard to draw the distorted bit of it. Using the same shapes through my ideas and showing invariance and reification

idea 4-freedom (reification/ invariance)

This idea is an developed concept of my original first idea. But to show my idea of freedom, instead of just birds and shperes, I made the spheres into doves and then into a paraglider, that would display the freedom within the idea and I think the doves kind of symbolise freedom to me. Then the free roaming paraglider will land into a prison cell where it will resume its original form, spheres.
I quite like the idea of this idea, and how if I do this on 3d max, which I intend to do my project on, all the pieces will be not in a straight line, but will be assorted everywhere and dispersed and distorted but as you see it in one angle it will look just like one picture together.
The adjectives for this idea was freedom, roaming, liberation, redemption, salvation.
Trying to make my idea more 3d by shading it in particular areas to look as if light was shining on a 3d object.

Idea3-Sketches (reification and invatiance)

My third idea was of reification and invariance, as random siple shapes are formed first into a random bike/car to and angel and then to a devil all using exactly the same piece but changing slightly, being invariance, and the image is made by reification. I do not like this idea as much as the other two though.

idea2 cont.. invariance/ multistability

Dog with muzzle and bird with top hat. These are more ideas of what I could put on another face of my box for my second idea.

Idea 2-sketches (reification, multistability)

'

The second idea of mine was of a cube which was made with reification. Each face of the cube would be seen differently with their own images but joined with multistability, for as you rotate each face of the cube it would look like some other image within the same image. If I do this idea, I think I will only do 3 faces of the cube, as 6 just sounds like too much. The juxtaposition being the last image would be the opposite of the first image.

sketches- reification and invariance (freedom)

Free, soaring. This is my first idea with a few sketchings. Reification and invariance as the image is made of the shapes surrounding it making it reification and invariance because it originally was from 3 simple spheres and throughout the whole transformation you can tell it was made from that one sphere. Using the juxtaposition from being free to being trapped.

Ideas

I have thought of a couple of idea for my assignment but have not yet decided between my second option between multistabilty and invariance. My first idea was using simple shapes in 3d max starting with simple spheres that would slowly morph and separate and then eventually the emply space inbetween it would form a bird in the distance, and then as it begins to dive, it will seem as though it comes closer and more of the body will be able to be seen. The blocks making the shape will see of a sky texture and coloured. The shapes will be the same but only slightly shifts as the bird comes closer. The bird diving will eventually hit the ground and the it will become a reitified cage with 3 spheres floating inside
This will be a mixture of reification and incariance. reification will form the shape and invariance as throughout the whole thing you can obviously see that the bird was formed through 3 simple spheres, which were transformed. The juxtaposition being freedom and being stuck in a cage
My second idea was a reificated cube, but on each face of the cube it would be the shape of something, but rotated would look as something else. and each of the faces would do the same so would be multistability. The backgrounds would change texture in accordance to the image. the juxtaposition being maybe the first and last image totally contrasting reach other

Abstract conceptualization

With those images I searched for in the research part of this assignment was that within those images, it was mostly plain and black and white in quite a few. and to make it better I would firstly make it colourful, but not just randomly bright colours but colours that I think would suit it and make it look more real and attractive to any audience. I'm not saying that black and white is dull or bad but I think in some of those images the black and white let down the image considerably. As for just being flat, 2d images, it could be made into a real object and within that object would be the illusion as in the case of the multistability image of the pretty/old lady, it would have been very interesting if it was made into maybe a type of statue that was made just of the head and shoulders. The images that actually did have colour though, none of them had a natural colour to them which I found quite disappointing. As for the images that seemed dull and boring I think if it had a purpose other that the image it would have made it more interesting, like for the emergent box, instead of boring lines it could have been made out to be a see through windowed room with little bojects inside or something. At the moment I'm not too sure what to do in the terms of concepts but I still wish to concentrate on reification and maybe multistability or invariance? But definitely using digital means to do so.

Emergence

The image from http://images.google.co.nz/imgres?imgurl=http://vegasociety.com/brain/image016.gif&imgrefurl=http://vegasociety.com/brain/optical_illusion_16.html&h=587&w=463&sz=174&hl=en&start=112&sig2=rjPSspf7NujtB_reDFx5zA&tbnid=EkqJyPmO0yCyLM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=106&ei=6SbIRseOLKOGggOFwL2uAQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doptical%2Billusions%26start%3D100%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D20%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN and may look like a image of a tree and a field with buildings in the distance and with a lady. But as you look closer in the picture you will see a picture of a mans head within it, camouflaged as it is classified as emergence in the Gestalt theory.
The top image, which I found really interesting as the face was well hidden and moulded within the image but I think this image would look better with more colour aswell.

reification2

These images are used in a way that the other shapes surrounding the image actually forms the image which I find quite interesting. As odd and plain shapes form it. I found these images from http://www.interaction-design.org/encyclopedia/gestalt_principles_of_form_perception.html where these images have actually been found from an actual logo and book cover. These being reification. The shapes around are not joined together but forms a shape.
The two that most interest me at the moment being reification and invariance. As I like the idea of forming something out of something so simple as random shapes and making things that are not connected but form something.
With these images I liked the fact that aswell as being colourful and attracting, these also had a purpose not just an image but a logo and a cover of a book aswell

reification

With the use of other shapes another is formed, as the first image uses the four shapes not joined together to form the square with the empty space inbetween. From http://people.csail.mit.edu/fredo/ArtAndScienceOfDepiction/figGroundVasa.gif and http://www2.plymouth.ac.uk/distancelearning/course/pragnanz2.gif The second image using the empty space within the black negative picture to form yet another one which I find quite interesting. Called reification as it uses other shapes to actually form another one where you didn't expect it. In the empty space between the objects.
The box at the top made of other images. although it conveyed this concept well, I did not like it, it just seemed plain and uninteresting as it was just a box, unlike the two images hugging each other as it is not a plain primitive object but makes another shape with the image around it. althoug it was just black and white I think in this circumstance it was the right colours to display the reification

invariance

As different shapes are combined within the bicycle and you can tell those shapes are put with in it, as it changes form, from http://www.atpm.com/9.10/images/design-gestalt.gif.
I find it quite interesting due to the fact that you may look at the shapes and then the bicycle and then know that all the shapes that are randomly strewn are infact the shapes within the object. making this "invariance" as it is a transformation of the smaller shapes into a object.
The other image is one where you can see invariance as although it is they are all different yo can see all the same aspects of it as they are all statues but start from dull. plain and unrealistic to more colourful and life-like.
What I didn' like about the bicycle was the fact that not only was it just plain white lines combined together, but it was not as easy to distinguish the different parts of the bicycle so easily and had to look at it for a while before realizing.

Gestalt- multistability (illusion)

I find these images really interesting as they are illusions and they seem as though they move within the image as you focus on one thing but then your eyes can also see the other as well.
The second one interesting me more as the although you can see the faces by the vase you can also see it very much more clearly in the shadow it produces and the way it uses the shadow of its form to show it better. All of these in which they all change in the way you percieve it. you can see it one way and then see something else within the same image.
In these images the box did not impress me at all as it is dull and are just lines, and had nothing at all to make it interesting and was only black and white. The pretty/old lady picture however I found quite interesting but the thing that let it down was that it was as plain as the box. no colour and attraction as much as it could have. The vase with two faces around it I found intriguing though, and I liked it as the shadow elaborated the shape of the two images that made up the multistability, and wasn't just a 2d image like all my other images but involved the 3d object aswell.

Non Sequitur

From the source http://www.dictionary.com/, I found this definition of non-sequitur.
"non se·qui·tur (nŏn sěk'wĭ-tər, -tŏŏr') Pronunciation Key n.
1. An inference or conclusion that does not follow from the premises or evidence.
2. A statement that does not follow logically from what preceded it. "
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non_sequitur_%28logic%29 it is also latin for "it does not follow" so in this context it is a two separate things that are not in relation to any other part of each other and it does not follow.

Research-juxtaposition

Reseaching the word "juxtaposition" to get a clearer idea of the word. I researched it in http://www.dicrionary.com/ and it came up with the definition: "jux·ta·po·si·tion /ˌdʒʌkstəpəˈzɪʃən/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[juhk-stuh-puh-zish-uhn] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1.
an act or instance of placing close together or side by side, esp. for comparison or contrast.
2.
the state of being close together or side by side.

and with the help of wikipedia, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_juxtaposition)
it says "Random juxtaposition refers to the stimulation of creativity in problem solving, design or other creative pursuit by confronting two unrelated concepts or objects, usually the goal or problem to be solved on the one hand and a randomly selected object or concept on the other."

Hidden but alive-Post production notes

Although my assignment was based around M. C. Escher's works, what more intrigued me was the mere fact of his making the images alive. Something you never would suspect to happen. Therefore, with my assignment I wanted a picture of some type of painting really comeing alive not just in a picture but in physical form aswell. The shelves I used in my assignment I found necessary to elaborate the realness in it all, as it gave a sense of a solid form as an ornament in my project. i also made the painting 3d in the sense it came came out of the page to give the borderline of 3d emerging out of the 2d image. The trees that were bigger in the image would come closer to you as in real life that would happen. As you look closer into that image you will also see hidden images of a man's body, a man's head, a snake, a fox's head and a giraffe's neck.
These pictures taken to give a different point of view and close-up of my project.

Final Product- hidden, alive, lively

This is my final product for the first assignment with the mixture of painting media as well as the 2d dimension mixed with the 3d dimension as the picture comes out of the painting. All in all, I am pretty happy with the final product.

tree

the thicker branch that I made rather than the trial one, was very useful as the monkeys I made were able to hang on to this branch more easily. It also looks more realistic than my one I made before for experimenting.

monkeys

The monkeys I made of clay did not exactly come out as I expected when I first made them, as they could be mistaken for koalas or something else, but after painting them, they look more like monkeys. Using wire to shape the body around was very useful

clay and wood

The clay used is easier to mould as I found out in the active experimentation but it did not stick well unless water was used, so i decided to use wire for the frame of it to support it all together.I found an alternative to balsa wood called basswood which held quite well and had less of a tendency to break. The left image being the one without the wire compared to the one on the right with wire supporting it.

overall idea.

My final surprise design will be comprised with illusionary patterns and the form of it was it changes frequently from different media and object but in general has the same image.
Making the painting 3d and changing the madia within, having branches coming out of the pictures with clay monkeys from it, then wrapping the branches onto trees made of basswood which is slightly stronger than the balsa wood and the same hard cardboard with simpler branches. The shelves will be made of perspects.

Another tree experiment-wire and masking tape.

This is the material in which the branch is going to come out of the painting and become real. To make it ive used wire intertwined into each other to make the branch which is then wrapped around with masking tape. This is a good method to make the branch in my opinion but I think for the final one I will make one with a thicker branch as it will be easier for the monkeys to sit upon the branches that way

Monkey experiment-clay and foam + glue

Although this does not look much like a monkey, it is a really good material to use. it moulds really well. I bought two materials in which I thought would be useful to make the monkeys with, but however, the first material was this modeling type of material made of foam and glue, although it moulded well, it did not work as well because it was too sticky. Once you moulded it into the shape you wanted to, you would deform the shape just by trying to geting off your hands, so that material was not so great. this material is clay and it moulds very well

painting experiment-hidden images

Although it is not finished yet, I think my painting part of my project is goin quite well. Soon I will use colour pencil, gouche and acrylic paints.

tree experimentation notes

Although my paper model was quite good, as I attemped using hard cardboard the material was too hard to cut through especially cuting thorugh the branches and the balsa wood was too fragile, I also attemped using mesh chicken wire type material, but did not work out as wen I tried to cuting it to the particular shape the small strings of wire would come out and disfigure the shape as well as the sharp edges were quite dangerous as well. With that material, I thought I could give the tree abit of a more realistic nature but it did not work out. I do wish to use the balsa wood and the cardboard, so if i were to do so, I would probably try to find a slightly stronger wood yet not too strong and maybe use the same cardboard but with a easier branch shape to cut with. maybe for the smaller trees that are involved.

tree experimentation part2

These two were made using the type of material in which I wanted to use. The top one was made using Balsa wood and the bottom one was made using hard black cardboard.

Tree experimentation

This is a paper experimentation to see if it would work. I was using watercolour paper in this experiment. It stood quite well and had the look I had intended to look like, But it was not the type of material in which I wanted to use.

Overall Idea-2d to 3d

My concept being a 2d image becoming 3d as the transformation of the for as well as the hidden images within the painting. The overall idea will be first a main picture that will be 3d aswell as within that image there will be hidden images that you would not expect it to have and then it will range in mediums. First it will be in pencil then colour pencil then in gouche and then finally acrylic paint, which from there the image will come alive and become braches as the branches come from the image in the painting of a forest with monkeys and the monkeys will come alive aswell made of soume mouldable material, the branches made of maybe wire and masking tape. The physical branches will then be wraping around trees made of balsa wood or hard cardboard or sum material like that, held on top of shelves made of perspects.and the monkeys will be upon it aswell. The idea of illusionary pattern is shown in the hidden images in the painting and the transformation that surprises is the idea of a painting though 3d, to give it more interest, makes the image come alive.

tree sketch

The Trees on the shelves that I wish to make physically will be made by two pieces of 2d material joined together to make it look 3d, as shown on the picture.
